The first thing I want to ask you is, how did it feel to win the Grammy award back in 2003 for Days go by?
God, gob smacked, shocked, happy etc etc ,
To be honest its not something that has really sunk in, still im like. 'Yeah, I won a Grammy' but it really is the highest accolade you can receive for music, now I have to try and get another one !! (Yeah Right !)
There was a lot of talk of Dirty Vegas being well known in the states, but not in the UK at the time. Apart from the track being used for the Mitsubishi advert in the states, do you think there were any other reasons for this?
Well, we did amazingly well in the States before we had even a chance to promote the record without in the UK, so people thought we weren't interested in the UK, its just we never really had much press coverage in the UK, I think due to the success in the States , its just that happened before the UK plot for the record had even started. Maybe the fact that we appeared on Jay Leno, David Letterman and Carson Daley, that kinda helps to get you well known in the USA !!' But still in the UK we were very well known, especially as a good (maybe even Great!) live act.. But we still did sell quite a few Album's !!
You've been on tour with Moby in the states and Groove Armada in the UK as well as playing DJ gigs all around the world. Which do you prefer, and what are the major differences between touring with a band or as a DJ?
Main thing is with the band you perform the tracks you have made yourself and when you see them singing the words back its amazing , and DJ'in of course you play other people's records, but you do get the same feeling when the crowd reacts (even thou most DJ's now do make records!) . What do I prefer ?? , hard question to answer , I love DJ'in the most , always have , but now ive been DJ'in solid since leaving DV, doing a Live show would be good fun again and with the band it was like having all your mate's with ya at every gig , it was such a fucking riot , DJ'in's quite a lonely game, traveling the world on your own !!
What is the most interesting and unusual gig you have ever played?
Played at many a good old party, one of my fav's is the Serpentine Summer Party that happens in London every year , I've been lucky to play that the last few years (google it !) . Also I've played for everyone from Kylie to Kate Moss and M&S to Madonna , so I guess doesn't get anymore diverse !. Unusual ?? , I'm sure I've played at many, but by that time my memory kinda fails on me !!
What percentage would you say you divide your time between production, DJ'ing and other projects?
Ok, Studio/Production work 60/70% DJ'in 30% and if I ever get that 10% a week im lucky, maybe ill take that off , this year ive been far too much of a workaholic , but hey if you love what ya do !!
Has this always been the case, or has this changed over the years?
Hmm , I guess so I've always been as quite a prolific producer of music, I have had time's when the DJ'ins started to go more , but I love making music !!
Are the any up and coming producers around at the moment that have really caught your eye or should I say your ear?
To me there's a lot of very constant people out there House Wise, Arno and the Get Physical Lot, RadioSLave, Nic Fanciulli , Jay P, Mark Knight & MTV, Steve Mac, Dean Ramirez, AudioFly, Ewan Pearson, Soul MkKanic, Mark Ronson, LCD, Kurd Maverick, Tom Novy, CSS, New young pony club And ive been pretty luck to work with a few of these people, I'm always looking (?), and listening to great music ' And it doesn't just stop at house music !!
''I'm in Love with you'' was an essential new tune on Radio One in July earlier this year, did you think you would have that much success with that track?
When me and Steve Mac did it, RadioSlave popped down to the studio and we were all sitting there going, god this is a good record'. We passed a few CD's about and nothing happened, then a year later Toolroom picked it up and it blow's up. Its now going come out on Positiva and they have big things for it. Me personally I always thought it was a great track/song and sometimes it takes a long while for these things to work.. Fingers crossed !!
Your going to be doing the Essential mix on Radio One next week. What sort of things can we expect and is there a certain way your going to approach it?
Well, I started asking my friends for the latest music they made and then just thought Fuck me, everyone put's the hottest tracks on there E-Mix when they do it, so I scraped that idea and put records that I thought showed what
1.I make as a producer
2.Where my heads' at
3.What I play as a DJ
and I hope it does that, From DFA to Daft Punk Via Dopple Whipper !! , But it does somehow make sense as a mix !! , Hope you like it!!
After you've finished touring around Australia in January, what are your plans for the future, any more projects in the pipeline that we should now about?
There's a hell of a lot BIG things in the pipeline as a writer & producer , I have my and Jay P's Superbass Album and my first Dj Mix Album both coming Via Toolroom.
A track on Re-kids I did with Audiofly with a VERY special remix on it and I also have some things that are very hush hush at the moment!! Don't worry they will all make sense early 2007 !!! J
Thank you for your time Paul.
