Here are two quick interviews from deck masters QBert and Marky who both play Chibuku Shake Shake this weekend in Liverpool'
QBert
1) The Chibuku show on December has got the Turntable Room, dedicated
to the art of turntablism, deck trickery and outrageous skills. How did you first get to grips with developing your own incredible style and how do you see the evolution of your scene from its beginnings to now?
Well, I knew from the beginning that it was a musical instrument and I've always had this plan to keep learning to become better for the rest of my life, because I'm so curious to see what will happen if I never stop.
2) If you had the power, what one thing would you do to change the
music industry?
Get rid of the stupid sample law. It really puts a stop to why real hip hop is hip hop... it's as if there were a law against collages, you know? But on the opposite side, it has really helped us to disguise our samples in a very creative way.
3) The Turntable room is dedicated to Grand Master Flash - tell us your thoughts about this legend and if he influenced you?
He was the first to bring back the breaks on 2 turntables with a mixer he made... before him there were no mixers designed to do what we do today. We wouldn't be juggling records if it weren't for such an ingenious idea!
4) How would you compare the old scene to the new ' what have been the biggest changes you have seen during your career? How much has technology affected things?
Well I've seen the evolution in the turntable arts since the beginning. Technology is getting better along with the skills, and both will keep progressing just as music always gets better. One thing for me that I'm always looking for through all this is scratching in general on vinyl. I still love it raw and analog.
5) If you were having a party for your friends in your house, what kind of music would you play and why?
Well there's 2 rooms, one for the scratch nerds'and another room to dance with the girls and guys.
6) Which other artists are doing it for you right now?
I'm listening to a lot of Benny Goodman and Old Jazz Solos.
7) Are you excited to be playing Liverpool?
Of Course!
8) Tell us one thing about yourself that no one knows.
I want to move objects with my mind.
DJ MARKY
1) You're playing at Chibuku which features the Turntable room, dedicated to the arts of deck trickery and skill. You're known yourself as having a few tricks up your sleeve as well ' how did you learn your tricks?
Practise, practise practise! Some things you can learn like the scratch or cutting from one plate to the other but you have to spend time trying things out to see if they work or even if they are useful. I know that things like scratching adds to the crowd enjoyment so I practise a lot and try my best to get it right. You get tips from other people as well and sometimes you see someone do something and think - wow! that was amazing I have to try that - and everything evolve from there
2) How would you compare the old drum and bass scene to the new ' what have been the biggest changes you have seen during your career? How much has technology affected things?
Technology is massive, trust me. Things like Final Scratch, Serato and now Ableton has made it easier to play a wider range of tunes which is good, but it also takes away from the base of the music which is the vinyl. Sometimes I use Serato in my sets but only when it is a brand new track and I havent had time to cut it or like when I do 6 hour sets at The End cos you just cant take enough bags in to the club to last 6 hours. The technology also mean that anyone, and I mean anyone can play a set in a club. Ableton you dont even have to beat match, its crazy. The actual scene though is still good. It still has the energy and the vibe is really good. Plus its more of a global thing now. You can go almost anywhere in the world and find a really good Jungle party!
3) If you were having a party for your friends in your house, what kind of music would you play and why?
Funk! I love old funk tunes and proper hip hop, not this new gangster stuff, real tunes! The music back then had real soul and the analogue quality of the way it is recorded as well make it sound even better. Like wine man, gets better with age.
4) Which other artists are doing it for you right now?
Lots of good people around: Redeyes from France, he has just done a track for my label, then there is people like Logistics, Craggz & Parallel Forces are killing it with this Live thing they got going on, the bad boy Zinc, lots of people are doing it right at the moment. not to mention Bungle, the guy is hot at the moment!
5) Are you excited to be playing Liverpool?
Yeah man, I love playing in Liverpool. The vibe is always good in the club and the people are really up for it. That's what I look for, people who are there to have a good time and listen to good tunes. That's perfect.
6) Tell us one thing about yourself that no one knows.
But if I tell you, then everyone know? Some secrets are best kept secrets!;-D
