Every good celebrity bash has a good DJ. With a family in the public eye as much
as the stars who hired him, it didn't take long before Mark Ronson was on the
most wanted list for the said spot (rocking parties for everyone from Jay Z to P
Diddy to Gucci to Hugo Boss, to name but a very few).
Ronson went on to bang out a torrent of dancefloor-dwelling remixes, and soon expanded to full-on
production - first Nikka Costa's debut album (though if you blinked, you may
have missed it), and then his own critically acclaimed LP 'Here Comes The Fuzz,'
which featured Ghostface Killah, Mos Def, Sean Paul, Q-Tip and Weezer's Rivers
Cuomo. The LP contained the infectious 'Ooh Wee,' which quickly climbed the
charts worldwide and to this day remains a staple in every conscious DJ's box.
With a continual need for fresh beats and an ear blessed to spot talent, it only
made sense that he'd launch Allido Records, an extremely promising label whose
first signings include Chicago's Rhymefest (co-producer of Kanye West's 'Jesus
Walks') and Australian superstar Daniel Merriweather. Most recently, his tune
with Alex Greenwald has every dancefloor getting down to a melancholic and
heart-pulling Radiohead classic ('Just'), disguised as a party starter fuelled by
funk and bright horn blares. His other current projects revolve around his
apparent penchant for topping the pops, working alongside luminaries such as
Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera, Robbie Williams and Amy Winehouse.
As for
DJing, he still surfs the air waves every Friday on East Village Radio, on top of
trotting around the globe with the demanding schedule he tends. While touring,
he recently crafted a live set, equipped with a full band (bass, percussion,
keyboards, trumpet, tenor sax, trombone) and vocals from the aforementioned
soul crooner Merriweather. After Ronson's blistering live performance at their gig
in Liverpool, the Chibuku crew couldn't resist bringing him down to the Big
Smoke, when they come to once again shake the walls of Fabriclive next month.
Detroit's wonderfully rousing addition to the techno scene, Recloose, made his
own live debut in the echoing chambers in Room One a few months back, using a
full band to rework tracks from his glittering album 'Hiatus On the Horizon.' This
time around, Recloose will take to the decks with a brassy, housey, swingy sound
particularly catered for Fabriclive's Room 3. Joining him will be two Chibuku
residents that have a sound particularly catered for...just about anything, really.
Matty J and Luke Carr only leave the house with a bag that's plenty mixed ' to
simply label them as house or deep electronica DJs would patronize their eclectic
styles. Matty J's work with Nuphonic has scored him gigs alongside Ashley
Beedle, The Unabombers, Idjut Boys, Bugz in the Attic, The Scratch Perverts,
Joey Jay and Daniel Wang. Meanwhile, Luke Carr, aka 'the Ralph Lawson of
Chibuku,' has shared the spotlight with Kenny Dope, DJ Shadow, Marshall
Jefferson, Gilles Peterson, Jacques Lu Cont, Dimitri from Paris, James Lavelle,
Dexter and even Mr. Lawson himself.
