"The overall style of the mix is deep house; deep, groovy and hypnotic, but in a modern way." - Dan Ghenacia
Since 1995, after returning from San Francisco with a bag of vinyl, Dan Ghenacia has been educating the Parisian underground with his take on house music. Via Ghenacia's 'Kwality' Sunday morning afterparty residency at Le Batofar, which he began in 1998 and finished in 2002 and where he met his Freak n'Chic label-mates Shonky, Dyed Soundorom and :Terry:, he bought a different, deeper sound to the dancefloor and inspired the sound that we now know as Freak n'Chic. In 2003, after he finished Kwality on a high note ("It was too packed, we'd had four years of really great parties and we felt like we did the best parties, so we decided it was the best moment to stop and have a really good souvenir of the place."), Ghenacia began his Freak n'Chic imprint.
The closely-knit label has introduced and nurtured some of dance music's most uprising talent: Shonky's recent, debut album 'Time Zero' aims directly at the dancefloor and caused a major dent in hypnotic techno circles, Jamie Jones released his first ever EP 'Amazon' on Freak n'Chic, whilst his 'Still Here' EP caused a big Ibiza stir last summer, Dyed Soundorom released his debut 'Question' EP this year to a very receptive audience, earning himself more than a few 'one to watch' accolades in the process, as well of course Dan Ghenacia himself, who through his own releases and through his collaboration with David K as U&I, has delivered the true Freak n'Chic sound to our ears. Now, we take a look into the personal record selection of the man behind the label.
"The idea of the compilation is to 'highlight' what is going on for me as a DJ/producer and with the music I like and play - with the artists I'm working with and the artists I love. For the name, I tried to find something that included the word 'highlights' - in a musical sense - and I also wanted something that 'highlights' the magnifying glass theme on my eye - we found something in between 'Eyelights'. I like it." Ghenacia
