EXIT Festival is proud to announce that they are winners of the Yourope Award for Best European Festival at the UK Festival Awards 2007. Presented with the accolade at a prestigious awards ceremony at Koko in Camden, EXIT beat off stiff competition from Benicassim (Spain), Lowlands (Netherlands), Pukkelpop (Belgium) and Roskilde (Denmark).
We were so pleased to be nominated in the first place and never expected to win. We are really surprised and very grateful for all the votes and support from the UK people. enthused EXITs Ivan Milivojev who was there to except the award. This is a big step for us and it is amazing that EXIT is popular outside the Balkan region. EXIT has become a real social force that is a symbol of togetherness and cultural diversity and enables us to promote social campaigns that are important for Serbian and Balkan youth such as fighting the Schengen visa regime. We aim to bring people together from the Ex Yugoslavia region and beyond in order to promote the interaction of different cultures, traditions and beliefs through music and social activities.
EXIT is the biggest music and cultural event in South East Europe, set within the walls of the 17th Century Petrovaradin Fortress and offering stunning views over the city of Novi Sad. From its humble beginnings as a student initiated project against the Milosevic regime, EXIT has now gained international recognition with over 10,000 festival goers from the UK making the pilgrimage to the festival in 2007.
The Fortress site houses 24 performance arenas within the 6km sq castle complex, connected by stunning cobbled streets, ramparts and tunnels. The Dance Arena is regarded by many as the best in the world and was named one of the Best DJ Booth Views on Earth in Mixmag (UK) with Switch commenting After going through a 50ft medieval tunnel to get back stage, the booth looks over a valley in the grounds of the fortress and 25,000 people all jackin to the festival sound system. Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, Eric Prydz, James Zabiela and Nic Fanciulli from the coveted DJ Mags Top 100 poll all rated EXIT as the Best Festival on the Planet.
Karen Young, Dance Arena Manager says delightedly, EXIT festival always exceeds everyones expectations, whether its a performer or a festival go-er, everyone is overwhelmed by it. The Dance Arena particularly with it being set within the walls of the Fortress, the acoustics, and the indescribable energy of the 25,000 people when the sun is coming up simply blows them away - and us each year! I think what makes EXIT so special is a combination of the unique history of the event, the magical setting, the different performers we have each year, and above all its the energy of everyone who attends and works on EXIT. Its a dynamic and an incredibly special event.
Paxton Talbot Exit Co-promoter and Director of Lily Co adds We make a point of listening to the feedback we get about the festival and try and make it a better each year. As after all, its the people that make it all happen and create the amazing atmosphere that is renowned worldwide. See you in 2008!
Now in its 4th year, the UK Festival Awards celebrated another great year of live outdoor music. Organised by Virtual festivals the winners are decided entirely by votes from the general public, which makes winning even more special.
We opened our doors this year to European festivals, in recognition of the significant contingent of British tourists who now attend these events. We were thrilled that all of the nominated events made the trip over the Channel, to attend our awards, and delighted that Exit was voted Best European Festival. It is a spectacular event and a favourite with many of the artists we speak to, as well as fans Says Steve Jenner, Director of Virtual Festivals who run the UK Festival Awards.
Exit 08: 10th 13th July 2008. Artists will be announced in April 2008.
