Exeter-based Functional Records hits 50 this month following 10 years of releasing some of the best breakbeat pressure in the scene. To celebrate they prepare to drop an awesome 12 double pack featuring four top remixes of classic Functional back cat alongside Functionals Finest Moments a discount compilation album compiled by Functional artist and long-time resident of the labels sister club night Beatz & Bobz Tom Real.
Born as an offshoot to the UKs longest running monthly breaks club night Beatz & Bobz as a way to gain exposure for residents and to showcase music from west country artists, the last 10 years have seen Functional Records grow to become one of the most respected labels in its field. Originally focused on west country artists such as Spoon Wizard, Silken and Phantom Beats Functional soon grew to feature releases from some of the major players in the UK breaks scene and beyond.
Functionals Finest Moments compiled by Tom Real represents the labels finest releases to date. Featuring 12 original productions and remixes from the likes of Tayo Vs Precision Cuts, Dreadzone, Rob Smith, Will White, Rennie Pilgrem, Tom Real Vs The Rogue Element, DJ Killer, Boabinga & ID, Ben & Lex and many more, this album not only charts the labels path over the last 10 years but also goes some way to provide a definitive journey through the last 10 years of breaks. Tom Real has been resident at Functional Records sister club night Beatz & Bobz since the tail end of the 90s. Having watched the breaks scene explode and develop he has always been a keen enthusiast of the sound mixing it up alongside house music, electro and techno. Joining the label with production partner The Rogue Element in 2003, the pair have gone on to deliver five killer singles for the label and helped push Functional into becoming one of the finest labels on the planet.
Functional Records 50th Birthday coincides with Beatz & Bobz 10th Anniversary and 2007 will see a series of big celebrations.
