::- HARD SELL
Masters of hip-hop and Turntablism in their own right, Dj Shadow and Cut Chemist have joined forces for the first time since 2001 and are bringing their genre-defying project, The Hard Sell, down under in April.
Following in the footsteps of their legendary Brainfreeze and Product Placement sets, Shadow and Cut Chemist are set to amaze Australian audiences with a daring and complex performance that sees them live on stage with 8 turntables (yes 8!), 4 mixers and an array of audio and video equipment, tricks and gadgets. Needless to say their show is beyond normal musical and technical expectations with trickery that very few DJs would even attempt.
This is the first time DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have performed together in Australia and it is truly something special and unique.
Flaunting rules with a flawless blend of music from all eras that won’t leave you saying “been there, heard that” these two cutting-edge Californians are the best tag-team since Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker - this is real Turntablism at its mind-blowing, skill-bending best.

::- Snowbombing 08
After Snowbombing ’07 firmly secured itself as one of the major players on the festival map, Snowbombing ’08 returns with what promises to be the biggest and most eclectic musical festival of the winter season. Snowbombing ’08 announces that this year’s Austrian fiesta will take place at the popular party resort of
Mayrhofen between 31st March and 6th April, seeing thousands of British snowsports and music enthusiasts flock to the slopes, streets and spas for a week of unadulterated fun.
Famous for delivering a cutting edge line up of world class DJs, Snowbombing 2008 is set to excel itself, once again working with the cream of UK club nights this year including Together, Black Rabbit, Issst. Wax:On and Platform 12. Plus, new this year comes a tribute party of epic proportions: celebrating 20 years of acid house in The Garage will be Graeme Park and Peter Hook (New Order) for a truly inspired Hacienda night - pure manc musical magic. With a strong foot firmly in dance music this year’s DJ line up is already shimmering with acts including The Plump DJS, James Zabiela, The Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, DJ Yoda and SB veterans The Cuban Brothers return for more mad capped, snow capped tomfoolery. All this and a blistering live line up still to be announced that is already crammed with the best in new live music and a rock n’ roll - après ski spirit! Keep your eyes peeled for line up coming soon….
And so to the now legendary Arctic Disco… Although only launched last year it is already become a part of Snowbombing’s beguiling mythology – this year it is going to be bigger and better – snow wonder! It’s not every party at which you arrive in Austria’s biggest cable car, before dancing in a club made completely of snow, and drinking cocktails in glasses made from crystal clear ice! Not every club offers you the chance to wash away your day’s activities in a steaming hot tub, prior to cuddling up beneath blankets in an Ice Cinema, or dance around a bonfire, beneath the stars. But that’s exactly what the Arctic Disco experience offers. For the first time, they’re offering snowy sleepovers. Wave goodbye to the last cable car and spend the night on the mountain, eating dinner, drinking wine and dancing in an igloo…really…does it get any better than this? Plus, with old favourites like The Street Party and the Highway to Hell Pro boarder competition back for 2008 expect even more from this truly unique event.
As one of the largest and most highly regarded resorts in the world Mayrhofen gets completely taken over for a week long party of hedonistic adventure and extreme sport. The resort also boasts some of Europe’s most lavish spas so you can also relax and enjoy the amazing spring sunshine and snowy mountains of one of Europe’s most snow-sure, late season resorts. The nearby Tux glacier (Austria’s highest lifted point) is only a short (free) bus ride away, and although open all-year round, is at it’s best in spring.
It couldn’t be cheaper flying to Snowbombing this year. You can pick up flight for less than £100 and with EasyJet now flying to Innsbruck there are even more seats available! Innsbruck is less than an hour away from Maryhofen and is also served by GB Airways.
Having said that, more people this year are opting not to fly and having decided to join The Snowbombing Rally! This year over 100 cars will be forming a pleasurable procession and driving through the beautiful mountains, enjoying pit stops in Cologne, Germany, before arriving triumphantly in Mayrhofen.
For information on how you can take part, go to

::- Exit Festival Wins
EXIT Festival is proud to announce that they are winners of the ‘Yourope Award for Best European Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards 2007. Presented with the accolade at a prestigious awards ceremony at Koko in Camden, EXIT beat off stiff competition from Benicassim (Spain), Lowlands (Netherlands), Pukkelpop (Belgium) and Roskilde (Denmark).
“We were so pleased to be nominated in the first place and never expected to win. We are really surprised and very grateful for all the votes and support from the UK people.” enthused EXIT’s Ivan Milivojev who was there to except the award. “This is a big step for us and it is amazing that EXIT is popular outside the Balkan region. EXIT has become a real social force that is a symbol of togetherness and cultural diversity and enables us to promote social campaigns that are important for Serbian and Balkan youth such as fighting the Schengen visa regime. We aim to bring people together from the Ex Yugoslavia region and beyond in order to promote the interaction of different cultures, traditions and beliefs through music and social activities.”
EXIT is the biggest music and cultural event in South East Europe, set within the walls of the 17th Century Petrovaradin Fortress and offering stunning views over the city of Novi Sad. From its humble beginnings as a student initiated project against the Milosevic regime, EXIT has now gained international recognition with over 10,000 festival goers from the UK making the pilgrimage to the festival in 2007.
The Fortress site houses 24 performance arenas within the 6km sq castle complex, connected by stunning cobbled streets, ramparts and tunnels. The Dance Arena is regarded by many as the best in the world and was named one of the ‘Best DJ Booth Views on Earth’ in Mixmag (UK) with Switch commenting “After going through a 50ft medieval tunnel to get back stage, the booth looks over a valley in the grounds of the fortress and 25,000 people all jackin’ to the festival sound system”. Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, Eric Prydz, James Zabiela and Nic Fanciulli from the coveted DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll all rated EXIT as the ‘Best Festival on the Planet’.
Karen Young, Dance Arena Manager says delightedly, ‘EXIT festival always exceeds everyone’s expectations, whether it’s a performer or a festival go-er, everyone is overwhelmed by it. The Dance Arena particularly with it being set within the walls of the Fortress, the acoustics, and the indescribable energy of the 25,000 people when the sun is coming up simply blows them away - and us each year! I think what makes EXIT so special is a combination of the unique history of the event, the magical setting, the different performers we have each year, and above all it’s the energy of everyone who attends and works on EXIT. It’s a dynamic and an incredibly special event.”
Paxton Talbot Exit Co-promoter and Director of Lily Co adds “We make a point of listening to the feedback we get about the festival and try and make it a better each year. As after all, it’s the people that make it all happen and create the amazing atmosphere that is renowned worldwide. See you in 2008!”
Now in its 4th year, the UK Festival Awards celebrated another great year of live outdoor music. Organised by Virtual festivals the winners are decided entirely by votes from the general public, which makes winning even more special.
“We opened our doors this year to European festivals, in recognition of the significant contingent of British tourists who now attend these events. We were thrilled that all of the nominated events made the trip over the Channel, to attend our awards, and delighted that Exit was voted Best European Festival. It is a spectacular event and a favourite with many of the artists we speak to, as well as fans” Says Steve Jenner, Director of Virtual Festivals who run the UK Festival Awards.
Exit 08: 10th – 13th July 2008. Artists will be announced in April 2008.

Along with the impressive main stage, this year will also host four themed dance arenas, boasting the cream of international DJ talent, names such as Stanton Warriors and Serge Santiago who have headed-up the DJ bill in previous years, alongside a star studded cast of home grown Spanish artists ranging from traditional to modern, gypsy to flamenco, electro to minimal and a myriad of musical experiences.

::- AUSTRALIA TOUR
SWITCH
Famous for what he and friends Jesse Rose and Herve cheekily coined as “fidgit house,” Switch set dancefloors on fire with original bass-heavy tracks Get Ya Dub On, This is Sick and perhaps the most loved yet overplayed bootleg of 2006, A Bit Patchy.
With more aliases than you can poke the proverbial stick at, Switch/Solid Groove/A Brucker, is probably most well-known for his remixing prowess. Unless you’ve been hiding in a bomb shelter since Y2K, it’s fair to say that you would have heard the likes of Basement Jaxx, The Chemical Brothers, Les Rhythmes Digitales, Kelis, The Black Ghosts, The Futureheads, Lady Sovereign, Spank Rock, Bonde Do Role, Simian Mobile Disco, Armand Van Helden and many, many more getting the truly original and identifiable Switch treatment.
In more recent times some of the music industry’s truly elite have also employed this master’s production skills with Switch featuring heavily on the new M.I.A, Santogold and Tricky albums. And just to prove that he really has all the boxes ticked, Switch’s labels Dubsided and Counterfeet (co-owned with Sinden) have been going from strength to strength, featuring the exquisite work of the likes of Sinden, Count of Monte Cristal, Speakerjunk, Radioclit and Duke Dumont.
After closing Field Day 07 in Killer fashion, Switch will be back to blow the speakers at one of these following venues:
Friday November 23: Tonight Only Showcase @ The Bakery Artrage Complex and SoCo Cargo, Perth

Sunday November 25: Sounds on Sunday @ Greenwood Hotel, Sydney
Thursday November 29: Dirty Thursdays @ Monastery, Brisbane

THE GLIMMERS
The Glimmers have achieved stardom through their aptitude for remixing; most notably with their rockin' instalments in the DJ Kicks and Fabric Live series, along with remixes of Bloc Party, The Killers, New Order and Calvin Harris. With little regard for era or genre, The Glimmers deliver a seamlessly mixed brew of punk funk, vintage acid house, disco-tech, sleazy pop and nu wave sounds that are effortlessly cool. Fun, fresh and quirkily eclectic, these glimmering stars have all the ingredients for a good time.
Friday November 23: Tonight Only Showcase @ The Bakery Artrage Complex and SoCo Cargo, Perth
Saturday November 24: Harbourlife @ Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, Sydney
Saturday November 24: Killer presents Switch, Boys Noize and The Glimmers @ The Abandoned Cinema Complex, Melbourne

TIM DELUXE
Part of the strong Underwater stable, Pacha resident Tim Deluxe is best known for his playful funky house hits like It Just Won’t Do and Mundaya, as well as his rockin’ remixes of The White Stripes and The Blur.
His latest album Ego Death shows that he has developed an edgier techier sound that brings out his dirty side. The Little Ginger Club Kid is all grown up and wants to play with you!
Friday November 23: Tonight Only Showcase @ The Bakery Artrage Complex and SoCo Cargo, Perth
Saturday November 24: Harbourlife @ Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, Sydney

So enough with the housekeeping, here's the invitation list for the pool party...
Where will the re-united RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE play their first shows outside of America? At BIG DAY OUT 2008, that's where. Eleven long years since BIG DAY OUTers last pointed their middle fingers heavenwards and declared: "F--- you, I won't do what you tell me!", California's RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE return to take the power back. Killing in the Name, Guerrilla Radio, Bulls on Parade, Know Your Enemy... Songs of rare power from a once-in-a-generation band. Witness the power and the re-ignited passion of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE at BIG DAY OUT this summer (ALL SHOWS).
In 1994 she brought her big time sensuality to BIG DAY OUT. Countless incarnations later, BJÖRK returns for BIG DAY OUT 2008. Backed by big beats and an even bigger brass section, the singular Icelandic superstar will electrify as she brings to life songs from her new album, Volta, and reanimates fan favourites from Army of Me to All is Full of Love. Always shape-shifting, always avant-garde, there is no one on earth like BJORK. And there is no experience on earth like BJÖRK at the BIG DAY OUT (ALL SHOWS).
Purveyors of hearty Australian rock'n'roll, GRINSPOON, make their triumphant return to the BIG DAY OUT in 2008. After cooling their heels for a while after the release of Kills, Thrills and Sunday Pills (2004) these JJJ darlings have hotted them right back up again with their fifth studio effort Alibis & Other Lies, which hit the local charts at number 2 and has been nominated for ARIA rock album of the year. GRINSPOON are set to satisfy the seething masses at the BDO with scintillating swagger and a raw rock sound that will tattoo your eardrums! (ALL SHOWS).
ARCADE FIRE began 2006 in a church in a small town outside of Montreal, recording their second album Neon Bible. They'll begin 2008 with another religious experience - converting the BIG DAY OUT faithful during their first ever tour Down Under. The experimental Canadian indie septet, who floored critics with their 2004 debut Funeral, then invaded charts worldwide with Neon Bible, are a band on the cusp - BIG DAY OUT punters will be lucky enough to witness ARCADE FIRE make that mythical journey from acclaimed indie group to genuine rock force. Praise be (ALL SHOWS).
BIG DAY OUT is proud to welcome back the best loved Aussie hip hop pioneers, the HILLTOP HOODS. Things couldn't be better for this Adelaide crew who have taken it to the world. For now, life is all Number-1-chart-debuts, tons of Awards, sell-out live shows and the joy of putting Australian hip hop on the agenda of music fans everywhere. Having built their following with killer albums The Calling (2004) and The Hard Road (2006), the HILLTOP HOODS hit a homer with the tracks "The Nosebleed Section" and "The Hard Road". In 2007 they released an impressive strings album reworking their hits with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for The Hard Road: Restrung. These festival kings of real hip hop are not to be missed so c'mon down to the front row and feel the love (ALL SHOWS).
In 1996, BILLY BRAGG sang for the first generation of BIG DAY OUT goers. In 2008, he'll sing for a whole new generation of BIG DAY OUTers - and probably a few who were there last millennium, too. The Bard of Barking will turn 50 before he reaches our shores this summer - but the fire burns more brightly than ever. Moving an audience and improving the world (his latest initiative, Jail Guitar Doors, brings music and meaning to inmates) remain his top priorities. The man who sang of a New England has a new lease on life. Be re-inspired by BILLY BRAGG at BIG DAY OUT 2008 (ALL SHOWS).
In 2008 we're very excited to welcome Australia's favourite bard of the musical ballad, PAUL KELLY, who will be making his very first BIG DAY OUT appearance. Truly an Australian icon and one of this country's most important songwriters PAUL KELLY has created a rich collection of classic songs spanning 25 albums. Throughout various incarnations and collaborations as well as composing music for films (Lantana and Jindabyne) Paul Kelly has remained relevant and inspired, with recent releases Ways and Means (2004), Foggy Highway (2005), and his new LP Stolen Apples all testament to his ongoing success. With a seemingly depthless talent for song-writing PAUL KELLY captures wry observations about love, life and everything in between with a unique charisma, emotion, simplicity and wit. Whether or not God tells you to, it's definitely a good idea to check out PAUL KELLY at the BDO this summer (ALL SHOWS).
BIG DAY OUT 2008 is hyped to welcome a band not much at the cutting edge as they are wielding the scissors that cut the damn thing in the first place. When not creating acclaimed albums as one half of production team DFA, James Murphy leads LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, the electro-disco-punk-funk-noise-pop sensation behind Losing My Edge, Daft Punk is Playing at My House and North American Scum. Two years ago, BIG DAY OUT got moving to the LCD DJ experience. In 2008, we get the full LCD band: guitarist Al Doyle (of Hot Chip), bassist Phil Skarich, keyboardist Nancy Whang and drummer Pat Mahoney. Their show, in a word: "bloodthirsty". Bring it on - LCD SOUNDSYSTEM is playing at our house! (ALL SHOWS).
Returning to the BIG DAY OUT in 2008 is the enchanting and versatile SARAH BLASKO. Known for her intelligent pop music, Blasko's compositions venture toward grand melodies and inspiring, soaring pop arrangements. Gorgeously accomplished, her debut album, The Overture & the Underscore, shot her into the public consciousness sparking critical acclaim and a string of ARIA nominations. Her follow-up What the Sea Wants, the Sea Shall Have has been equally praised for its complex simplicity. Sure to thrill BIG DAY OUT fans, her live interpretations of her music flaunt more seductive edges, and showcase her dynamic vocals which are delivered with a captivating rawness and energy. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
Enter the twilight zone at the BIG DAY OUT with FAKER. After the whirlwind success of their single "Hurricane" and their debut album Addicted Romantic (2005) FAKER has recently accomplished the feat of producing their sophomore album, Be The Twilight. If the first single "This Heart Attack" is anything to go by, we can look forward to an album of heartfelt, powerful passion-filled pop with a twinge of melancholy. And their stage show is nothing to be sneezed at either, unless you're allergic to an enthralling live performance filled with wild stage antics and infectious bravado! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
Makers of mischievous music, the MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS will be rocking the casbah this BIG DAY OUT. These Melbournians sent ripples across the music world with their first two EPs Raised By Wolves and Secrets of the Universe, the latter spending numerous weeks atop the Australian Independent charts. 2007 heralds their cracking debut LP, Dystopia. Think time-travel and glittering music in galaxies far, far away; spiralling synths and effervescent guitars, a sonic mission through laser-soaked corridors and rainbow-lit roller derbies. OR: "Like The Rapture with John Carpenter on keys, their pummelling space-disco is the perfect bridge between Bloc Party's indie elegies and a synapse-shredding Justice DJ set" is what NME reckons. You got the hot tip here. Get busy and dizzy on the dance floor at the BDO with some heady, progged-out space disco! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)
School might be out for summer, but DIZZEE RASCAL will be dishing out lessons at BIG DAY OUT 2008. Only three albums and 21 years old, DIZZEE RASCAL is pulling off equations way beyond his years - winning the Mercury Music Prize with his 2003 debut Boy in Da Corner, and confirming his place as Britain's premier hip hop striker with 2007's Maths + English. Spitting razor-sharp, rapid-fire words over an instinctive blend of hip hop, grime, ragga, rock, garage and whatever gets him hyped, DIZZEE is a ferocious performer, an innate showman. "This ain't no sit-down thing," he's been heard to holler from the stage. Educational and entertaining? They said it couldn't be done! Take a class with DIZZEE RASCAL at BIG DAY OUT 2008 (ALL SHOWS).
Rising out of the booming Central Coast punk scene in the early naughties, SOMETHING WITH NUMBERS have grown from a branded "emo punk" band to a full-blown rock and roll powerhouse. After wowing fans during their BDO debut in Sydney in 2007, we're thrilled to welcome them to the BIG DAY OUT travelling circus for the first time nationally. Choosing to focus on their own music as opposed to other influences and trends around them, Jake, Lachlan, Tim, Scott and Dave are truly a band that has come of age and are heading for big things. With killer choruses, hooks and kick arse rock riffs SOMETHING WITH NUMBERS will be delivering the goods at the BDO this summer! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS).
For those who consider a genre to be a jail cell, BIG DAY OUT brings you unclassifiable New York foursome BATTLES. Avant-rock, angular, experimental, abstract, avant-garde… often scary words in the hands of lesser lights; but magic in the hands of BATTLES’ Ian Williams (Don Caballero), Tyondai Braxton (all kinds of experimentia), Dave Konopka (Lynx), and John Stanier (The Mark Of Cain, Tomahawk). “Your brain might feel like it’s been completely rewired,” said The Guardian as they dished out a five-star review for the band’s debut album, 2006’s Mirrored. Brain-surgeons, electricians, and those with a taste for the unexpected are invited to enter the BATTLES-field at BIG DAY OUT 2008 (ALL SHOWS).
The New Zealand invasion continues as BIG DAY OUT welcomes energetic tear-aways from the near east, CUT OFF YOUR HANDS. And they sound a little something like this: if you took one heavy-duty blender and added the likes of Gang of Four, The Cure, Death From Above 1979, Joy Division and Split Enz, you'd get a pretty good idea of their thrashy, angular, arty dance rock, that's complemented by the emotional vocal gymnastics of lead singer Nick Johnston. These guys are becoming renowned for frenzied live shows that have gone down a treat supporting visiting internationals including Love Is All, We Are Scientists, Ratatat and Bloc Party. With EP number two Blue On Blue released this year they're winning those indie kids over left, right and centre. Catchy tunes, hot guitar licks, hella fun! What more could you ask for? Kick out the jams with CUT OFF YOUR HANDS at the BDO! (ALL SHOWS).
Stay tuned for the second announcement of artists coming soon!
